Displacement Project

Displacement is a global crisis that affects millions of lives, both historically and today. In this project, we have turned to the archives of the Sisters of the Holy Cross to tell these stories—the stories of those displaced from their homes by violence, war, and political conflict, and the stories of those women who heeded the call to serve. We focus on the sisters’ close work with refugees and displaced persons during the American Civil War (1861-65) and the refugee crises in Cambodia (1979-80), Lebanon (1982-83), and El Salvador (1983-86).

Presentation of Work

This project was presented on Nov. 3, 2021 in the Cushwa Leighton Library, where attendees had the opportunity to discuss the history of the Sisters of the Holy Cross's work with refugees, as well as interact with archival materials.

The project has also been shared with a wider audience through digital exhibitions and articles. Read Dr. Laura Williamson's description of the project above, and then check out the narrative digitization work done by the students of the Digital Humanities Project Lab here.
