Abstract

This article examines scanxiety, or patient anxiety surrounding medical imaging, and the factors that may contribute to hesitation or refusal of clinically appropriate studies, including concerns about radiation exposure, fear of diagnostic results, and claustrophobia. It highlights strategies clinicians can use to reduce imaging-related anxiety through evidence-based imaging selection, clear patient education, expectation setting, and shared decision-making. The article also reviews nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic approaches for managing claustrophobia and emphasizes the clinician’s role in addressing the psychological as well as diagnostic aspects of medical imaging.
