Addressing Language Barriers Through Medical Education

Abstract

This article highlights MU-WCOM’s medical Spanish curriculum as an approach to reducing language and cultural barriers in patient care. Using a standardized curriculum, the elective has increased student confidence in conducting Spanish-language patient interviews and recognizing the influence of cultural beliefs on health, with plans to expand the course across multiple years of medical school.
