About the Journal

What does Arete mean?

The naming of the journal is reflective of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College's motto Virtus cum Scientia or Virtue with Knowledge United. Aρετή (Arete) is an ancient Greek word meaning excellence of virtue.  It is intentional that  Αρετή (Arete): Journal of Excellence in Global Leadership be an opportunity to unite various people and perspectives in the global leadership field to further increase and share knowledge.

Broad in Scope 

 Αρετή (Arete) Journal of Excellence in Global Leadership publishes theory-based papers on different subjects within global organizational leadership including; but not limited to, theory building, strategy, organizational behavior, employment changes, human capital, cultural and global mindset, cultural intelligence, action projects for positive change, ethics, diversity and inclusion, technology for good, learning and development, global equine business and leadership, case development, leveraging strengths for decision-making, and healthcare leadership including therapeutic studies.

The journal offers a platform that encourages theory development, theory-related discussion, and action projects from multiple disciplines with the aspiration of generating commentary and debate.   

Open Access at no cost to you

Aρετή (Arete): Journal of Excellence in Global Leadership is published in collaboration with the Global Leadership Institute and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.  It is a global, peer-reviewed open-access journal that publishes to a broad audience who appreciate the intellectual breadth of a global theoretical framework. There is no monetary cost to publish.

Types of Submissions

Besides regular full-length submissions, Αρετή publishes case studies, perspective-taking essays, and critical essays that contribute to the conversation regarding a problem or issue. (see our submission Guidelines for more details on these journal features).  Link to Submission Guidelines

Copyright Notice

Authors retain copyright and grant Aρετή (Arete): Journal of Excellence in Global Leadership the right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under an International Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial License (CC-BY-NC 4.0) that allows others to share the work for non-commercial purposes, with an acknowledgment of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal. 

Essentially authors grant the journal the royalty-free right to use, copy, distribute, and display the submission in any format or medium for any educational, non-commercial purpose, including as part of the online journal. This may include maintaining one or more copies of the submission in multiple formats for backup (i.e.; the third part holds one or more copies for such purpose).  

CC-BY-NC: This license allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. 

Ethics Statement

Αρετή (Arete) Journal of Excellence in Global Leadership journal was founded in 2022 and will seek membership in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in 2023. In the interim, Αρετή (Arete) follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). These guidelines cover the duties of authors, the duties of reviewers, the duties of editorial board members, duties of the Chief Editor. The journal uses an open journal system (OJS) to support transparency. The COPE publication guidelines are available at https://publicationethics.org/guidance/Guidelines
